This week’s Jazz On The Beach celebrates its 100th edition of broadcasting live every week on Deal Radio with a playlist of some of the most requested music featured on the show. There are 60’s and 70’s classics - Art Pepper’s Patricia, Milt Jackson’s Sunflower, Stanley Turrentine and Shirley Scott’s Hustlin’ and Jack Wilson’s Easterly Winds, plus favourites like Slim Gaillard’s Potato Chips, Ray Charles’ What’d I Say and Herbie Mann’s theme song Comin’ Home Baby.
As for contemporary artists, there’s Sunday Davison by Giacomo Smith’s Kansas Smitty’s, saxophonist Binker Golding’s You, That Place That Time, and Africa from Maisha that featuring drummer Jake Long and saxophonist Nubya Garcia. We played Samara Joy on the very first show on 29th September 2021, well, actually twice, with It Only Happens Once from her eponymous debut album and also her harmonies with fellow vocalists Shenel Johns and Vuyo Sotashe on Ruben Fox’s So Much Joy. Since then Samara has become a double Grammy-Award Winner for Best New Artist and for Best Jazz Vocal Album, and at 23 years old is about to become a major jazz star.
Next week we’ll be back with more of the latest releases and tracks from the racks. Hope you’ll keep listening for the next 100 shows…
This week Blues Beach took a blues cruise around the United States (plus a brief stop in London) with Earl Hooker, Muddy Waters, J.B. I visited the Herne Bay Jazz and Swing Festival last weekend and had a great time. Here’s my review for London Jazz News.
