Among the many highlights on this week’s Jazz On The Beach is tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson’s live version of Kenny Dorham’s composition Blue Bossa that originally featured on his 1963 Blue Note debut Page One. It’s from Joe Henderson In Japan (Milestone, 1973), recorded live by Norio Yoshizawa and Tamaki Beck for Victor Musical Industries (Milestone’s Japanese licensee) at the Junk Club, Tokyo in August 1971. Like many other jazz artists, Henderson was occasionally asked by nervous promoters to tour solo and work with local musicians to keep costs down, which is how he came to perform for a week with electric pianist Hideo Ichikawa, double bassist Kunimitsu Ina and drummer Motokhiko Hino. The results were so good that Milestone founder/producer Orrin Keepnews and Rudy Van Gelder edited and mixed the material for a record that is amongst Henderson’s best of the dozen albums from his Milestone years.
Sticking with tenor players, there’s Hank Mobley’s hard boppin’ title track from the album No Room For Squares (Blue Note, 1964) with trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Andrew Hill, double bassist John Ore and drummer Philly Joe Jones. And from Buenos Aires, Horacio ‘Chivo’ Borraro’s killer Charlie’s Blues from El Nuevo Sonido Del Chico Borraro (Microfon, 1966), a landmark in Argentinian jazz and an extremely rare record, even more so in its original release in Chile a year earlier as Jam Session.
Among the new music is the Brad Turner Quintet’s title track from The Magnificent (Cellar Live), a homage to trumpeter Thad Jones featuring the pianist/trumpeter with a strong lineup including guitarist Peter Bernstein and double bassist Neil Swainson. There’s also singer/songwriter Ella Windsor’s just released Meridians (Round Trip Music), one of three new songs recorded in Buenos Aires with musicians including members of the legendary Funky Torinos, and the recently released Air from 19 year old producer Gan Gemi recorded live at MAP Studios (One-House).
There’s a version of Stanley Turrentine’s Storm by Sofia Grant from her new 5 track EP Extinction (jazz re:freshed) and pianist Joey Alexander’s Blue from his upcoming album Continuance (Mack Avenue, coming in November).
And finally, a track taken from the latest Norah Jones is Playing Along Podcast, where Jones sings and plays Wurlitzer electric piano with Questlove on drums and double bassist Christian McBride on a deeply grooving version of Pops Staples’ Why? (Am I Treated So Bad). The video is below and they make it look so, so easy.
