Jazz On The Beach 115: The Dealites' Special Playlist
Compiled by Dealites for Dealites and everyone else
This week’s Jazz On The Beach playlist has been compiled by four of my fellow residents of Deal on the South East Kent coast. I’m extremely grateful to Nik Huggins, Will Vine, Sue Savage and David Augustin for submitting such excellent choices which made for a terrific show.
There are so many highlights, Pat Martino’s Waltz For Geri from his debut album El Hombre (Prestige 1967), with the 22 year old Philadelphian guitarist soaring over a Hammond organ, drums and percussion groove. There’s saxophonist Roland Kirk’s circular breath-taking Many Blessings from The Inflated Tear (Atlantic 1968), tenor saxophonist Alan Skidmore and South African percussion ensemble Amampondo with the exciting Joyful Reunion from The Call (Provocateur 1999) and trumpeter Freddie Hubbard’s summer of love masterpiece Little Sunflower from Backlash (Atlantic 1967). I was particularly glad to hear more from alto saxophonist Brad Leali, his Vito’s Veto from Priority Soul! (New Jazz Renaissance Recordings 1999) is a killer.
There are some wonderful singers too, the peerless Liane Carroll’s incredible performance of Tom Waits’ Picture In A Frame from Billy No Mates (Splash Point 2003) and the title track from her album Seaside (Linn 2015), Deal resident Jo Doolan’s beautiful Dream Of A Dream co-written with partner and guitarist Richard Rozze from Dream Of A Dream (Pathway 2016), Ian Shaw’s moving version of River from Drawn To All Things: The Songs Of Joni Mitchell (Linn 2006), Gregory Porter’s warm and fuzzy Holding You from Take Me To The Alley (Blue Note 2016) and the jazz vocalist of the moment, Samara Joy, with her sensational Can’t Get Out Of This Mood from Linger Awhile (Verve 2022).
Next week’s Jazz On The Beach will end off the year with my favourite albums of 2023, while Blues Beach will be keeping up traditions by throwing a seasonal party. In the meantime, my thanks again to the curators of this wonderful playlist, I hope you enjoy it and have a healthy, happy and deeply jazzy Christmas!
