Jazz On The Beach 143
This week's radio playlist with Tyrone Washington, Tripp City, Oliver Jones Trio
One of the highlights of this week’s Jazz On The Beach playlist is tenor saxophonist Tyrone Washington’s sensational Natural Essence, the title track from his first and only album as a leader for Blue Note in 1968 when he was just 23 years old. He’s playing with a top lineup of trumpeter Woody Shaw (who he grew up with), alto saxophonist and flautist James Spaulding, pianist Kenny Barron, double bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Joe Chambers. Some may feel his playing was a little too out there, but I find it full of spirit and drive.
Washington’s credits include playing and recording with Horace Silver on The Jody Grind (Blue Note, 1966) and with organist Larry Young on Contrasts (Blue Note, 1967). In the wake of Natural Essence (and an unreleased Blue Note date with Herbie Hancock and Jack DeJohnettea a year later) there were more sideman gigs with Stanley Cowell on Brilliant Circles (Freedom, 1969) and Roswell Rudd on Blown Bone (Philips, 1976). He made two more albums of his own: the spiritual Roots (Perception, 1973) and the funkier Do Right (Blue Labor, 1974) before he changed his name to Bialar Mohammed and gave up music for religion.
New music this week includes Artistry In Rhythm from Tripp City (self released, August 2nd), a fabulous New York nonet that plays deeply swinging originals and arrangements led by double bassist Shane Allessio with alto saxophonist of the moment Sarah Hanahan, tenor saxophonist Ruben Fox (a big J.O.T.B. favourite) and baritone saxophonist Jason Marshall, trumpeters Noah Halpern and Alphonso Home, pianist Marius Van Den Brink and drummer Gary Kerkezou. Great stuff!
There’s Three Over Steel by SML from their album Small Medium Large (International Anthem, June 28th) featuring bassist Anna Butterss, synthesist Jeremiah Chiu, saxophonist Josh Johnson, drummer Booker Stardrum and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann, whose live improvisations are cut and pasted Teo Macero/Miles Davis & Holgar Czukay/Can style to great effect.
Two new single releases from London starting with alto saxophonist Sam Braysher and the snappy single The Right Guy from That’s Him: The Music Of Kurt Weil (self, June 28th) featuring singer Sara Dowling, pianist Matyas Gayer, double bassist Dario Di Lecce and drummer Steve Brown There’s the multi instrumentalist Oscar SHOLTO Robinson’s For The Love Of Stripes, a beguiling early release from his album Letting Go Of Forever (Deep Matter, November)with bassist Syd Kemp, vibraphonist James Larter, singer Phoebe Coco and strings by Clementine Brown.
Also this week, the great saxophonist Wayne Shorter’s previously unreleased version of Arthur B. Rubinstein’s Edge Of The World (the end theme from the movie War Games) recorded at the 2014 Stockholm Jazz Festival with his stellar band of pianist Danilo Perez, double bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade from the upcoming Celebration Vol. 1 (Blue Note, August 23rd), that Shorter curated before he died in March last year.
And finally, regular listeners Jill and Geoff of Deal’s The Town Kitchen love the cover of Canadian pianist Oliver Jones’ Cookin’ At Sweet Basil (Justin Time, 1988) so much that they’ve just had it framed and are about to hang in their newly refurbished kitchen, where they listen to jazz music constantly while cooking their award-winning kentish knockers (cornish pasties to you). So here’s the frenetic opening track Snuggles with double bassist Dave Young and drummer Terry Clarke.
