This week’s Jazz On The Beach playlist features two exciting live performances from trumpeter Donald Byrd and drummer Elvin Jones that are being released by Blue Note for the first time.
Byrd is in deep jazz fusion territory on The East from the album Live: Cookin’ with Blue Note at Montreux. Recorded live at the 1973 Montreux Festival following his groundbreaking new direction and commercial success with Black Byrd, the album will finally be released on what would have been his 90th birthday on 9th December. The core band members were Byrd’s Howard University students who were shortly to find success as The Blackbyrds.
Elvin Jones’ quartet perform a blistering version of the Sonny Rollins composition Oleo from the album Revival: Live At Pookie’s Pub. It was recorded in July 1967 at the little known club in New York City’s SoHo district where Jones had a weekly residency after leaving John Coltrane’s band. Alongside Jones are tenor saxophonist Joe Farrell, pianist Billy Greene and double bassist Wilbur Little.
There’s also music this week from Johannesburg artists Tumi Mogorosi and The Brother Moves On, both of whom have close links with composer/saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings. There’s a beautiful song from Georgia Cécile who was just awarded Jazz FM’s Vocalist of the Year and UK Jazz Act of the Year, and a cut from Binker and Moses’ latest which is Mojo Magazine’s Jazz Album of the Year.
I’ve been experimenting with layouts and the merits of ‘post v podcast’ over the last few weeks. Thanks for your patience and comments, what you see here is the option many of you have told me you preferred, which also includes a Mixcloud link.
