This week’s Jazz On The Beach playlist is only eight tracks long, or eight long tracks that don’t outstay their welcome. Some you may know well - Shhh/Peaceful from Miles Davis’ In A Silent Way released in 1969, John Coltrane’s Impressions recorded at The Village Vanguard in 1961 and Freddie Hubbard’s Red Clay from 1970.
Others may be less familiar, such as the emotional Blues For The Fisherman by Art Pepper from Ronnie Scott’s in 1980 and pianist Masabumi Kikuchi’s New Native from his electric Miles-inspired Susto in 1981.
To balance things up there are three terrific contemporary tracks, Kamasi Washington’s Truth from 2017’s Harmony of Difference E.P, The 12” Open The Gates by Maisha from 2020 and Repatriation of the Midnight Moors by Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber from 2021’s Angels Over Oakanda.
Enjoy the music and have a great Christmas.
