This week’s Jazz on The Beach playlist takes a look back at the best new music we’ve played over the past twelve months. It’s extremely satisfying to see so many young British jazz musicians writing and performing such incredible music alongside elder statesmen like Ben Sidran (79) and New Orleanian Charlie Gabriel (a mere 90).
The Artist of the Year Award is split between two remarkable talents: the sensational New York singer Samara Joy, for that’s exactly what she brings, and London saxophonist Binker Golding, whose genre crossing album Dream Like A Dogwood Wild Boy is superbly written, beautifully performed and deeply emotional.
If you’ve been listening regularly, either live at 10pm each Wednesday on Deal Radio, with the Mixcloud app or via this email, I hope you’ll agree with most of the choices on this playlist. If not, please let us know. Well, you usually do!
This week Blues Beach celebrates a Blue Christmas, but these songs sound great any time of the year. Charles Brown’s Merry Christmas Baby may be one of the best known tracks here and this is one of his many remakes of the 1947 original by Johnny Moore's Three Blazers featuring Brown’s vocals and piano. The Fabulous Thunderbirds’ (Rockin’) Winter Wonderland is a blast from 1983, best wishes to guitarist Jimmie Vaughan who had open heart surgery last week and is recovering well.
Happy New Year and as always, thanks for listening!
