This week’s Jazz On The Beach playlist includes the virtuoso Irish guitarist Louis Stewart’s wonderful version of the Antonio Carlos Jobim composition Wave. It’s from his album Out On His Own, first released by Livia Records in 1977 and about to be reissued on CD and digital with vinyl to follow.
New music includes I Think from drummer/producer Emanuel Harrold for Gearbox Records featuring Gregory Porter, and pianist Chihiro Yamanaka’s entrancing trio performance Today Is Another Day for Blue Note Japan.
There are catalogue gems from Kellee Paterson with her vocal take on Herbie Hancock’s Maiden Voyage, some greasy Hammond organ funk from Rippin’ Chicken featuring Delvon Lamarr, and a rare chance to hear Hank Jones switch to electric piano on Your Feet’s Too Big from the album Jones-Brown-Smith.

This week’s Blues Beach playlist includes a taste of Southern soul from Memphian Johnny Rawls with My Guitar from his 2011 album Memphis Still Got Soul. There’s Texan Angela Strehli’s Person To Person from her Ace Of Blues set for the newly resurrected Antone’s Records, which comes 36 years after her EP Stranger Blues was the first release on the Austin club’s label. Strehli is a big part of the Antone’s story onstage and off - she was their stage manager and sound engineer during the seventies.
If you’re a recent subscriber you may not be aware that Blues Beach broadcasts live on Deal Radio every other Thursday from 6.00pm - 7.00pm. It’s Jazz On The Beach’s ‘badass little brother’ and always great fun to put together.
