This week’s Jazz On The Beach playlist includes an infectiously playful vocal performance on Just in Time by Rickie Lee Jones taken from her new album of American Songbook jazz standards, Pieces Of Treasure. There’s the deeply swinging In My Pocket from 1978 by the British born pianist/percussionist Victor Feldman, who as an L.A. studio cat performed on more Steely Dan tracks than anyone apart from the Dan’s Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. (Thanks Expanding Dan and WaxPoetics).
There’s sorcery from Grover Washington, Jr with Mr Magic from 1975 and something fresh from London Brew featuring some of the city’s finest players including Benji B, Theon Cross, Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings, Dave Okumu and Tom Skinner channelling the spirit of Bitches Brew with Miles Chases New Voodoo in the Church. And with Miles in mind, prepare to be blown away by Jon Hendricks and Friends’ 1990 version of Kind Of Blue’s Freddie Freeloader, with the solos of John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis and Wynton Kelly performed vocalise-style by Hendricks, George Benson, Al Jarreau and Bobby McFerrin.
