Congratulations to Samara Joy, winner of Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album for ‘Linger Awhile’ at the 2023 Grammy Awards
If you’ve been listening to Jazz On The Beach for a while you’ll know that Samara Joy was our Artist of the Year 2021 and shared our Artist of the Year 2022 with Binker Golding. Now she’s a double Grammy winner on her way to becoming a major jazz star, and we’re absolutely delighted for her. To celebrate we’re playing her gorgeous version of Someone To Watch Over Me accompanied by the sensational guitarist Pasquale Grasso.
There are more great guitar performances on this week’s playlist: Wes Montgomery burns up the fretboard with organist Jimmy Smith on Jimmy and Wes, Louis Stewart dazzles with his solo performance of What’s New, Julian Lage and Bill Frisell play acoustics on The Layers and Martin Taylor takes off with double bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Al Foster on I Should Care.
Among the new releases are the rather wonderful Nightingale by the trio Mamal Hands from their album Gift From The Trees, Alpha Mist’s melodic and deeply grooving BC from his upcoming Variables and pianist Isiah J. Thompson’s tremendous The IT Department from The Power Of The Spirit.
Last October’s Blues Beach Psychedelic Blues Special went down well so we’ve put together another one. Plug in your fuzz tones and pour on the patchouli oil for The Doors, Steppenwolf, Janis Joplin, Harvey Mandel, The Electric Flag, Hot Tuna and more from the days when hippies played the blues!
