This week’s Jazz On The Beach playlist acknowledges with great sadness the passing of the composer, pianist and producer Burt Bacharach, a giant of 20th century music. There are two wonderful Roland Kirk performances of songs Bacharach wrote with lyricist Hal David - a tender Alfie from the album Now Please Don’t Cry Beautiful Edith released by Verve in 1967, and an exhilarating I Say A Little Prayer from Volunteered Slavery on Atlantic in 1969.
Yet again this week there are a number of exciting new releases including Resonance of Truth from South African pianist, composer and music producer Bokani Dyer’s upcoming album Radio Sechaba on Brownswood and the husband and wife double bass and piano duo Harvie S and Yukimi Maeda’s version of Bill Evans’ Time Remembered from their New York Memories set on RVS. The Los Angeles based vocalist Dwight Trible has a new single Truth from his album Ancient Future for Gearbox and saxophonist Walter Smith III previews his upcoming Return To Casual album on Blue Note with the track Contra.

Listening to Roland Kirk led to playing Sonny Rollins’ Alfie’s Theme from his album Alfie (Original Music From The Score) arranged by Oliver Nelson and released on Impulse. And exactly twenty years after the release of the iconic album These Are The Vistas on Columbia here’s The Bad Plus’ take on Blondie’s Heart Of Glass.

Over the past few weeks we’ve played tracks from the great Irish jazz guitarist Louis Stewart’s 1977 album Out On His Own that’s being reissued next week. Here’s my review for London Jazz News.
