This week’s Jazz On The Beach playlist features an advance single from the eagerly awaited debut album by 22 year old pianist and composer Sultan Stevenson, who honed his talent through the Tomorrow’s Warriors learning and training programme (he’s a T.W. Music Leader) and the Julian Joseph Jazz Academy. Guilty By Association features his trio with double bassist Jacob Gryn and drummer Joel Waters and the album Faithful One is released on 24th March by Whirlwind Recordings with tenor saxophonist Denys Baptiste guesting on five tracks.
Deeper cuts include the Blue Note pair of vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson’s Theme From Blow Up featuring its composer Herbie Hancock on piano, which was recorded in 1967 but not released until 1979, and guitarist Grant Green’s It Ain’t Necessarily So, recorded in 1962 and not released until 1980.
There’s also the Jacques Loussier Trio’s beautiful interpretation of Satie’s Gymnopedie No. 1: Var. 1, baritone saxophonist Serge Chaloff’s exquisite Thanks For the Memory and Kenny Clarke’s Bohemia After Dark from 1955, one of alto saxophonist Julian ‘Cannonball’ Adderley’s earliest recordings.
Following the recent post The South's Gonna Do It about Charlie Daniels’ song that name checked his fellow bands, this week’s Blues Beach focuses on the bluesier side of Southern rock during its seventies heyday.
