This week’s Jazz On The Beach features a selection of music celebrating the genius of the saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter, who passed away on March 2nd at the age of 89. There’s Infant Eyes and the title track from Speak No Evil (Blue Note 1966), Palladium from Weather Report’s Heavy Weather (Columbia 1977), Aung San Suu Kyi, from 1+1 (Verve 1997) the duet recording with Herbie Hancock, the title track from E.S.P. (Columbia 1965) with Miles Davis’ second great quintet and Sanctuary from Miles’ Bitches Brew (Columbia 1970).
We also have exciting new music from L.A. jazz figurehead Dwight Trible, the sensational young pianist and composer Sultan Stevenson, Kendrick Scott’s drums/double bass/saxophone trio and a great new version of Gee Baby, Ain’t I Good To You from Taj Mahal. There’s She Said She Said from Brad Mehldau’s new solo piano album of Beatles songs and Nina Simone’s wonderful interpretation of Bob Dylan’s Just Like A Woman from 1971. And many thanks to Rob Adams for suggesting saxophonist Helena Kay’s KIM Trio and her Amor Y Amargo from last year and François van de Linde at Flophouse Magazine for hipping us to Sonny Cox’s The Wailer from deep in the racks.
