Jazz On The Beach 80 & Blues Beach 22
This week's radio shows, blues stars play the Rolling Stones
The Easter Holidays have arrived on the East Kent Coast and Deal is buzzing with visitors after what feels a long and particularly raw winter. After a few days of beautiful sunshine earlier this week, Jazz On The Beach’s 80th show looks forward to better times ahead with two hours of new releases and hot wax from the racks.
There's saxophonist George Braith’s Extension which was recorded for Blue Note in 1964 and is an absolute killer, as is guitarist Ed Cherry’s Green Jeans released earlier this year by Cellar Music Group. These tracks have a couple of things in common, their lineups include Hammond B3 organ while Green Jeans was composed by guitarist Grant Green who plays on Extension.
This Wednesday would have been the great Stanley Turrentine’s 89th birthday, celebrated here with Don’t Mess With Mr T recorded for CTI in 1973. The drummer is Idris Muhammad, and his version of guitarist Joe Beck’s The Saddest Thing is another CTI classic and was recorded just a few months later.
Another excellent track from Black Jazz Records, this week it’s double bassist Henry Franklin’s Outbreak from The Skipper, released in 1972 and produced by Gene Russell, featuring intense solos from trumpeter Oscar Brasheer and tenor saxophonist Charles Owens.
New releases this week include Lights Away From Home by Artemis from their album In Real Time on Blue Note, Norwich trio Mammal Hands’ beautiful Riser from their Gift From The Trees on Gondwana, the violinist Sara Caswell’s moving South Shore from The Way To You, the Omer Klein Trio’s The Ravens from Life And Fire on Warner Music and the powerful Mogaetsho, a second track from Bokani Dyer’s sensational Radio Sechaba album on Brownswood.
Paul McCartney recently said during an interview with The New Yorker that the Rolling Stones were a blues cover band. Well, there’s nothing wrong with that! For this week’s Blues Beach the shoe is on the other foot, with blues artists covering songs from the Jagger/Richard songbook. There’s Muddy Waters’ definitive version of Let’s Spend The Night Together from Electric Mud, Luther Allison’s funky You Can’t Always Get What You Want and Albert King lights up Honky Tonk Women with his great guitar playing. Guaranteed to get your Rocks Off!

I’m a big fan of this sensational young pianist, here are some shots by Melody McLaren from the launch of the album Faithful One at the Jazz Cafe.
Soothe with Nahid de Belgeonne
Nahid’s a neighbour with a great deal of wisdom and good practice, give her Soothe Club on Substack a try.
Our radio show friends and sponsors Wellingtons have just launched their new menu which includes bagels, pulled pork and brisket now added to their list of breakfast and brunch favourites. Regular listeners already know that I’m particularly partial to the giant hot buttered salted pretzels (like the one below) from Welly’s in Park Avenue, and it’s great to see the menu getting freshened up for the new season.
