Thanks to the power of internet radio, Jazz On The Beach can be heard around the world wherever there’s wifi or mobile coverage. And that’s a wonderful thing, I’m extremely proud of our international audience and honoured to have their company. But at its heart, JOTB is a late evening local jazz radio show broadcasting to the seaside town of Deal and South East Kent. There may well be some parallels (both real and imagined) to KRML and Carmel-by the-Sea in California, but only Deal has a pier and views across the Channel to Calais.
On this week’s playlist, and quite by chance, the word Dance appears a number of times: saxophonist Eddie Harris’ Freedom Jazz Dance from The In Sound (Atlantic 1965), pianists McCoy Tyner’s Passion Dance from The Real McCoy (Blue Note 1967) and Ahmad Jamal’s interpretation of Herbie Hancock’s Dolphin Dance from The Awakening (Impulse! 1970) and drummer Tony Allen and Adrian Younge’s Don’t Believe The Dancer from Tony Allen JID018, which was recorded in 2018 and will be released by Jazz Is Dead in July.
We mark the sad passing of composer and arranger Don Sebesky with his inspired charts for two of my favourite CTI covers: flautist Hubert Laws’ take on the James Taylor song Fire And Rain from Afro Classic (1970) and vibraphonist Milt Jackson’s version of Freddie Hubbard’s title track Sunflower (1973).
There’s the beautiful Medu from South African pianist and composer Bokani Dyer’s new album Radio Sechaba which I wrote about for London Jazz News and is being released by Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings this week. And trumpeter Dizzy Reece’s Groovesville from Star Bright (1959) has just been reissued in Blue Note’s Classic Vinyl Series for all of us who are still hard boppin’
From the outset I’ve tried to make each week’s playlist accessible to jazz newcomers as well as satisfy more experienced listeners, and combine new releases from the exciting young players surfing the new wave of jazz music alongside the great artists who defined it. So please keep your comments coming about what you do or don’t like about the playlist, either via this email or at jazzonthebeach@icloud.com
