On a flying visit to London last week I stumbled across Yo-Yo Records in Hackney Road, a very funky record shop. The first thing I noticed (while tripping over someone’s bicycle leaning against the racks) was the great music playing which turned out to be Filidé by tuba player Ray Draper from the album The Ray Draper Quintet featuring John Coltrane (New Jazz 1958). Unfortunately someone was already buying it, an early pressing too, but I did pick up a couple of cool records including Hammond organist Don Paterson’s Oh Happy Day (Prestige 1969) with the extended workout Hip Trip featuring tenor saxophonist George Coleman. Yo-Yo is a great find, owner Derek was a mine of information and it’s another good reason to head east after picking up bagels in Brick Lane.
Plenty of new (and newish) releases this week, keyboardist Greg Foat collaborates with Venetian electronic maestro Gigi Masin on London Nights, organist Jim Alfredson grooves deeply with horns on Peepin’, there’s harpist Brandee Younger’s beautiful You’re a Girl for One Man Only, alto saxophonist Pierrick Pédron & pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba’s version of Jackie McLean’s Five Will Get You Ten and Pat Metheny’s From The Mountains from his new solo project Dream Box.
From the rack at the back of the shack there’s Sun Ra Arkestra’s charmingly out there Springtime In Chicago from 1957, Odetta’s funky Hit or Miss from 1970 and Polish pianist Krysztof Komeda Trio’s Ballad for Bernt featuring the Swedish saxophonist Bernt Rosengren from the soundtrack of the Roman Polanski directed 1962 movie Knife In The Water. For more on Rosengren read Phil Freeman’s excellent obit below.
