On Monday morning the new sign finally went up over Deal Radio’s new studio location in the middle of Deal High Street. Although Jazz On The Beach and Blues Beach have been broadcasting from there for the last couple of months, the sign makes things feel a little more complete. The radio station shares the space with its two sister companies: Evolution Music, who have developed a successful bioplastic LP (Evovinyl) and Roulette Media who promote musicians and grassroots artists. There’s a store at the front selling vinyl (plenty of strong jazz titles in there now) and all kinds of music related merchandise, it’s a nice fit for everyone.
On the playlist this week there’s hard boppin’ with a Detroit groove from drummer Roy Brooks with Homestretch from his 1964 album Beat, recorded at the Hitsville USA studio for Motown founder Berry Gordy’s short lived Workshop Jazz label. Alongside Brooks are trumpeter Blue Mitchell, trombonist George Bohanon, tenor saxophonist Junior Cook, pianist Hugh Lawson and double bassist Eugene Taylor.
This once hard to find record has now been reissued by Verve in partnership with Jack White’s Third Man Records in their excellent ‘By Request’ series, as has saxophonist Archie Shepp’s Kwanza which was recorded for Impulse! in 1969 but not released until 1974. One of its strongest tracks, New Africa, is also on the playlist this week and features trumpeter Jimmy Owens, trombonist Grachan Moncur III baritone saxophonist Charles Davis, pianist Dave Burrell, double bassist Walter Booker and drummer Beaver Harris.
There are a number of really special new and recent releases from young UK jazz artists this week including pianist and composer Raffy Bushman’s For Horace from his recent Silver Links album, the funky Inline by Leeds based MABGATE from their new EP, drummer Yussef Dayes’ Rust featuring Tom Misch from the September release Black Classical Music and Emma Rawicz’s Middle Ground from her debut coming in August.
Also…the remarkable 20 minute live performance of Patricia by Art Pepper that I mentioned here a few weeks ago, Jasmine Myra’s wonderful Horizons which was one of the highlights of last year, Steely Dan’s paean to calm recklessness Everything Must Go and the exhilarating Gwotet by David Murray and The Gwo-Ka Masters featuring Pharoah Sanders.

This week’s Blues Beach playlist was a great pleasure to compile with Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Junior Wells, Bonnie Raitt, J.B. Hutto, Arthur ‘Big Boy’ Crudup, Freddie King and Junior Kimbrough among the artists featured. There’s R.L. Burnside’s remixed It’s Bad You Know which featured in The Sopranos TV series as well as Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi honouring Blind Willie Johnson and GA-20 with a tribute to Hound Dog Taylor and The Houserockers.
