Jazz On The Beach 91
It was the Summer Solstice this Wednesday and a perfect warm evening on the South East Kent coast. This week’s Jazz On The Beach on Deal Radio celebrated with some old favourites: Lonnie Liston Smith - A Garden of Peace, John Coltrane - Cousin Mary, Eddie Harris - Sham Time, Thelonious Monk - Blue Monk, Stanley Clarke - Children of Forever , The Jazz Crusaders - Freedom Sound and Joe McPhee - Shakey Jake which came up in the entertaining piece below by pianist and writer Ethan Iverson a few days ago.
There was also a sensational cut from the Puerto Rican saxophonist Dávid Sanchez, who I worked with during my time at Sony Music. Mal Social was from his second solo album Sketches of Dreams which came out in 1995 and still sounds just as fresh and exciting as it did 28 years ago.
Among the new releases this week is a beautiful reading of a Randy Newman composition Dexter’s Tune performed by pianist Orrin Evans from The Red Door which was released last week on Smoke Sessions. There’s Grove Park by saxophonist Duncan Eagles from his Narrations album on Ropeadope and the Manchester duo Secret Night Gang with Do For You from Belongs On a Place Called Earth which comes out this Friday on Brownswood Recordings. There’s also the 86 year old drummer Louis Hayes still swingin’ big on the title track of his new Savant album Exactly Right!
And finally, the photograph at the top of the page is the cover art for trumpeter and producer Matthew Halsall’s new album An Ever Changing View, due to be released in September on his Gondwana Records. Water Street is the first track we get to hear, and typically of Halsall’s work, it’s beautiful.
