There are some exciting new releases on Jazz On The Beach this week (I do realise I’ve said that many times before), so let’s start with Marching Band from drummer Yussef Dayes featuring vocalist and saxophonist Masego, which is taken from the album Black Classical Music (Sept 8, Brownswood Recordings). I first heard Dayes playing with the expanded Binker and Moses lineup on Journey to the Mountain of Forever (Gearbox Records, 2016) where he and fellow drummer Moses Boyd sounded fantastic playing together.
Another big track is producer and keyboardist Kamaal Williams’ Magnolia II with trumpeter Theo Croker from new album Stings (Sept 27, Black Focus Records). it was only a few years ago that Yussuf Dayes and Kamaal Williams worked together as Yussef Kamaal and made a great album before suddenly (and prematurely) going their separate ways. (Black Focus, Brownswood Recordings, 2016). It’s good to see both doing well and making great music.
Delighted to be playing a second track from the superb Israeli trumpeter Itamar Borochov with his excellent What Broke You? from the album Arba (Sept 6, Greenleaf Music), and drummer Daniel Villareal’s terrific Sunset Cliffs from Lados B (Oct 6, International Anthem) with guitarist Jeff Parker and bassist Anna Buttress.
Going back to the 20th Century, there’s tenor saxophonist Chico Freeman’s beautiful version of John Coltrane’s Lonnie’s Lament from Spirit Sensitive (India Navigations, 1979) an album of jazz standards with pianist John Hicks, double bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Billy Hart.
Perfect for a warm Summer evening (it really was on Wednesday) is guitarist Laurindo Almeida’s Stairway To The Stars with alto saxophonist Bud Shank from the imaginatively titled Laurindo Almeida Quartet with Bud Shank (Pacific Jazz, 1955). Also sounding just right over the balmy coastal breezes was Yeh-Yeh from Lambert, Hendricks and Bavan (Annie Ross had left the group by then), which was recorded at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1963. Jon Hendricks had written the lyrics to the Rodgers Grant and Pat Patrick instrumental that was first recorded by Mongo Santamaria before Georgie Fame had a big hit with the vocal version in ‘64. And as promised last week, there’s Peregrines Dive from guitarist Calvin Keys’ Blue Keys album released last year (Wide Hive Records).

Putting together the Jazz On The Beach radio show over the last 99 weeks has been something of a labour of love; I get to discover new music, choose music that has meant a great deal to me and am constantly being made aware of great jazz from artists that I had either not taken enough notice of or had missed out on completely. Each show is broadcast live on Deal Radio (except for five occasions when I’ve had to prerecord) and I arrive at the studio with a pretty good idea of what I want to play but with far more tracks than I need for a two hour show, with those that don’t make it held over for the following week. Thanks as always for your comments and some very cool suggestions, you’re a pretty hip crowd!
