Among the new releases and personal favourites on the Jazz On The Beach playlist this week are two tracks from the great tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine (1934-2000). The first is a terrific organ-fuelled version of John Coltrane’s Impressions from the album Sugar, produced by Creed Taylor for his CTI label in 1970. The musicians alongside Turrentine are Freddie Hubbard - trumpet, Butch Cornell - organ, George Benson - guitar, Ron Carter - double bass, Billy Kaye - drums and Richard ‘Pablo’ Landrum - congas.
The second is a defining take on Ann Ronell’s Willow Weep For Me from the 1961 Blue Note album Blue Hour, a collaboration with hugely popular trio The Three Sounds: pianist Gene Harris, double bassist Andrew Simpkins and drummer Bill Dowdy.
Both tracks were recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at his studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.
Every year around the end of December, Antone’s Night Club in Austin, Texas, hosts the Jungle Show featuring Billy F. Gibbons, Jimmie Vaughan, Mike 'The Drifter' Flanigin, Sue Foley & Chris ‘Whipper’ Layton. Gibbons compiles an exclusive limited edition mixtape that’s only available from Big Henry’s Vinyl and Gifts at Antone’s.
For this week’s Blues Beach we revisit the 2021 mixtape playlist that’s filled with killer blues and gospel tracks from Little Walter, John Lee Hooker, Eddie Taylor, The Pilgrim Travellers, Frankie Lee Sims, Lazy Lester, Magic Sam and Shakey Jake, Snooky Prior, The Swan Silvertones and The Dixie Hummingbirds and Long John Hunter.
